ABOUT THE BFPL Founded in 1903, the Bigelow Free Public Library (BFPL) is an original “Carnegie” library. The building possesses an architecturally rare book “stack” area that has glass floors. This area is over 2 stories tall, is a freestanding structure within the library structure and is truly unique among the libraries in Central Massachusetts. The building is composed of three main areas: the Adult department on the ground floor; the Children’s department on the second floor; and the Computer/Reading/Activity area on the basement floor. The building remains essentially unchanged from its original state, with the exception of a handicap-access renovation completed in 1994. It has a significant collection of old and rare books, and many historical volumes. The library has 7 full-time employees, and our schedule provides 41 hours of operation per week.
The BFPL is a member of the Central Massachusetts Regional Library System (CMRLS). This association with the CMRLS allows us to provide our patrons with the following services: inter-library loans; A/V materials (books on tape/VHS/DVDs); continuing education workshops; and online-accessible databases.
"A house without books is like a room without windows. No man has a right to bring up children without surrounding them with books.... Children learn to read being in the presence of books." Horace Mann |
